BEST REGARDS

In Respond to the article by Fernando Casimiro (Didinho):
OS SÍMBOLOS DA REPÚBLICA DA GUINÉ-BISSAU DEVEM SER REAVALIADOS! 15.08.2009

By Armando Quadé.

In any democracy, it should be a basic understanding that a party's symbols should not be confused, be mixed or be taken for the national symbol. Following this logic, I absolutely agree that PAIGC symbols should not be the same as our national symbols. And, the changes to make a clear distinction, particularly in the symbols of these two different entities, are long over due.

But, I categorically reject the notion that we, as a country/people, should create new national symbols (flag, national anthem, emblems, etc.) that would be different from the current ones. I believe our current national symbols, including the five letters (P.A.I.G.C.), are some of the most important pieces of our history. As so, these must be kept (and be part our national curriculum system) to teach new generations about the struggles...to win our independence from our colonial master, to prevent indifferent attitudes towards our common history and, to keep reminding the world and those shameful...of our small but exemplar contribution to the liberation of Africa and mankind in general.

First of all and understandably so, if these national symbols are solely associated with the PAIGC party, the people in the other parties (for instance, PRS or PADEC) would not be keen to honour and celebrate what those symbols represent because it would enhance the prestige of the former. As well as any citizen who is an independent (from the electoral process or not) or any person who simply despises the PAIGC party for whatever reason would not hold the symbols dearly, as it should be. But most importantly as the stories (of the different battles and so on) of our national liberation are yet to be officiated/written, focus and unbiased conclusion of the events...reached by our national historians are crucial to do justice to those men and women who were part of these events in our history. For instance, an indifferent historian (because of his or her lack of sympathy for PAIGC party, assuming that the symbols are associated with this party) would not approach the subject matter...in an enthusiastic and objective manner, as opposed to if our current national symbols were not linked to this party. Therefore to avoid any kind of sentiment of uncaring towards our common history, our current national symbols should not be associated to one political party only. Otherwise, there would not be a great deal of sentiment of pride and national unity when it is time to honour our national symbols.

Second, as in any struggle for freedom/human liberation, in order for the next generations to understand, appreciate and protect their status as “free people,” they should absolutely and always be reminded of the sacrifices and the “price” older generations had paid to be freed. The new generations in our country also need to be constantly reminded about the sacrifices people who came before them had made... Let it be through many forms, especially through our current national symbols. For God's sake, if there is anything those brave men and women who had sacrificed their lives for our independence would love to hear, it is the telling of their bravery and sacrifices to our young people... And, what is the better way to do that more than the use of the great symbolism they have left us with?! So, our current national symbols are very important instruments for teaching our young brothers and sisters about the precious gifts of freedom they have inherited from an eleven years of bravery and sacrifices. Associating these symbols to one party would mean they cannot be legally used in our school system, which in turn will translate into lost history. And as the old saying goes, “people who don't know where they came from certainly will not know where they are going.”

Third and finally, our arm struggle for our independence as well as for the people of Cap-Vert was paradigm and well known in the entire world, especially in Africa. We were known as the first former colony in Africa to successfully fight and win our independence unconditionally. Yes, this is more than something to be proud of. We should be celebrating this remarkable accomplishment made by our brave and courageous people... Furthermore, we should continue to remind the world, especially Africans, that, yes we have a small and yet undeveloped nation but, we were ones in the fore-front of human evolution, from subjugation to liberation. And, we can still catch up and be active again in a different kind of...evolution because we once proved to be people of great strength, great capacity, and great resilience. So, I can only feel pity to whoever is not proud of this accomplishment in our history... Nonetheless, again our current national symbols, especially “Sumbia de Amilcal Cabral” can be perfectly used to remind the world who we are (as we used to be known for our bravery, for our capacity to adapt and evolve, for our persistence to reach the stated goal, etc, all through “Sumbia de Cabral”). Therefore, linking this particular symbol to PAIGC, as a party, can only discourage people who identified with other parties from using and being recognised as people of “Sumbia de Cabral...” Hence, all the great things we were known to be would simply be forgotten...or basically be minimised even in our own eyes...

I dare to say that Guinea-Bissau contemporary history started from September 19, 1956 with the foundation of PAIGC, as a liberation party... PAIGC was also the party that gave us our first national identity as free and self-ruled people...etc. So, because of these unique/unparalleled/unprecedented/extraordinary and profound influence this party has had in the creation and the shaping of our young republic for almost the past 50 years, most of the party symbols until now have always been reasonably so regarded by majority of our population as our national symbols. And, those symbols are still held dearly by these people who do not necessarily sympathise with the current PAIGC, as a political and democratic party. Hence, any attempt to create new national symbols different from the ones derived from PAIGC, the liberation party, would not only render injustice for our national heroes who have long gone...but, it would also discourage the majority of our citizens, again who may not be associated with the current PAIGC but were or whose families were part of the creation of these historic symbols, to have any king of affinity to these symbols again. However, I believe it would be repetitive/futile to even attempt to address those who are insensitive to the different reality that was/is Cape-Verde in relation to Guinea-Bissau and are always quick to jump into making false/unparalleled comparisons between these two countries. But, referring to the premise that Cape-Verde has changed their national symbols...so should have done Guinea-Bissau...I would only say this: yes Cape-Verde has changed or would like to change or forget about a lot of things in their history, including the history of slavery this nation was founded upon. So, nothing Cape-Verdians do to distance themselves from their past/reality is surprising... However, the most important thing for us, as Bissau-Guineans, is to choose not to forget our past so the path will be cleared to where we choose to end up. That means, keeping all the symbols derived from PAIGC, the liberation party including the name---P.A.I.G.C, as our national symbols and legally asking PAIGC, the political and democratic party to use their “creative minds” to create new symbols for their party, including the party name. Here is a suggestion... PADGB (Partido Africano Democratico de Guiné-Bissau)!

Nota: nao sou Nacionalista e nem tao pouco Cabralista.

Sincerely,
Armando Quadé.
